In 1987 Julie Frakes and I produced this documentary about the Institut Médical Chrétien du Kasaï (IMCK) in Tshikaji, near Kananga in rural Zaire. Today, Zaire is known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. At the time I was a young producer working with WCFC TV-38 in Chicago and still had a lot to learn. This early effort reflects my own naiveté and ethnocentric world view which began to change in the years after this project. The IMCK is a ministry of IMCK (Christian Medical Institute of the Kasai) and was established through an agreement of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission and the Belgian government in 1954. The IMCK is a ministry of the Medical Benevolence Foundation, an Atlanta based Presbyterian Medical Missions organization. The project was funded by Julie and I with help from our family and friends.
