Fall 2001 MOSAIC, the video magazine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Christianity is both an old and new religion in Africa. According to Acts 9 Christianity has been in Ethiopia from the beginning, while it has been in Tanzania for only a hundred years. Both churches, however, have something in common: rapid growth. The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus with its 3.5 million membership is the largest Lutheran Church in Africa and continues to grow rapidly. The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania has a membership of 2.5 million and is experiencing the same rates of growth. While rapid growth brings about many challenges to both of these churches, there are many more blessings. Go with MOSAIC on an evangelistic tour to see why these churches are growing and what the ELCA can learn from the African experience.
