Niagara Falls

Avoid Niagara Falls” I always thought as an America growing up in the Midwest. “That is where my parents generation went for their honeymoon.” While it is true that has been around for a long time (they were formed when glaciers receded at the end of the last ice age), Niagara Falls is a major league natural wonder and global treasure that is not to be missed.

Niagara Falls are massive waterfalls on the Niagara River, straddling the international border separating the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of New York. It is actually two falls, divided into the Horseshoe Falls on the Canadian side, and the American Falls. Visitors can view the America Falls from the Prospect Point Park observation tower. For an up-close look, you can buy passage on the Maid of the Mist; a tour boat that ferries passengers to the base of both the American and Horse Shoe Falls.

Gorgeous, Tim! Thanks. To read a wonderful short essay about somebody who went over the falls, check out a book of essays by Bryan Rogers, “The Last Human Cannonball.”

My mom forwarded your video link to me. I used to live in Buffalo, NY, and went to the Falls a couple times while living there — once in early September, when the weather was still warm, the grass in the park was very green and the flowers bright and beautiful — all this enhancing the magnificence of the Falls themselves. I also went to the Falls in the dead of winter…and THAT is an amazing sight as well, with so much of the water there frozen into huge chunks of ice. For anyone living near Niagara Falls, I highly recommend visiting it during different seasons.
