Picture This: The Lutheran, May, 2014 issue published a photo I took for the Lutheran World Federation Jerusalem Program recently. The story features Palestinian clown doctor Izza Natsheh with Red Nose Clown Doctors International as he performs for a child in the Lutheran World Federation’s Augusta Victoria Hospital. Everyone Loves Ice Cream

Everyone loves Ice cream. Even in an Islamabad, Pakistan market. Travel teaches me that you see what you look for. If you expect terrorist, plan to be frightened, and assume the worst, that’s probably what you will see. On the other hand, if you look for kindness, humor, and hospitality, that is most certainly what you will find anywhere in the world.

This image was taken while recording footage for a documentary about the US-Pakistani Interreligious Consortium. Facilitated by Intersections International, and in collaboration with the International Islamic University in Islamabad (IIU) and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS), the visit was part of the US-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium (UPIC), an effort to cooperatively set an action agenda toward policy change on both sides and building bridges of understanding and respect between Pakistan and the United States.

Red-tailed Hawk in the Rain

The Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is across the road from our house. Wearing rubber boots, I took a Sunday afternoon stroll in the rain and rapidly melting snow. The reward was a performance by this Red-tailed Hawk. He (or she, I’m not sure) was perched on a small tree by the lake. Moments after spotting the bird, he flew off, only to return with a field mouse in his beak. I’ll spare readers the details. Perhaps it was the large golf umbrella over my head, or this was just a fearless bird, either way, he didn’t take off as I inched closer. This shot is from about 30 feet. Panasonic Lumix GH3, Nikkor 50mm lens, F.1.8, ISO 200. Hand-held. No image stabilization.

New Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3

After a six month wait, my Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 is on the way! The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH3 is a micro four thirds mirrorless camera that represents a significant upgrade to my existing camera package.

The camera was released in small quantities by Panasonic back in September 2012. Actually getting my hands on one has been difficult. I pre-orderd one on December 19, 2012, but never was able to get an answer as to when it would be available. Finally, I found Samy’s Camera in California. Samy’s had a shipment of 60 cameras which sold out over night. I got the 55th one and look forward to its arrival next week.

– Contrast AF with a high level of response
– Magnesium Alloy Frame
– 1080/60p 50Mbps IPB and 24p 72Mbps ALL-I
– Venus Engine Image Processor

I took a walk over to Hidden Lake Forest Preserve to grab a sunset shot over the lake. The DuPage County Forest Preserve system is among Northern Illinois greatest assets. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 micro four thirds camera, Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm 1:4-5.6 lens. ISO160, 1/1000 sec.

Meeting Photojournalist John H. White

While on a shoot in Chicago’s Federal Plaza for the Council for a Parliament of World Religions, producer Kathy Dale McNair introduced me to Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist John H. White. Mr. White is a legend in Chicago journalism circles a true gentleman an a wonderful artist. I mentioned that I had first seen John work while covering the press conference announcing the death of Chicago Mayor Harold Washington at Northerwestern Memorial Hospital in November, 1987. John told me that he had been at City Hall when the mayor collapsed, and rode to the hospital in the back of an ambulance along with the dying mayor. Mayor Washington was not only a subject for John’s lens, he was a personal friend.

United Methodist Communications produced this video about my friend and colleague Paul Jeffrey http://kairosphotos.com Over the years, I’ve encountered a handful of individuals who inspire and convict me by demonstrating what it means to be a person of faith in complex world. Paul Jeffrey is one of those people.

“Despair, I’m convinced, is often a privilege of class. The poor don’t have the luxury of giving up.” The Rev. Paul Jeffrey is a United Methodist missionary who “uses both images and words to show how God is moving in the world to empower people who’ve been relegated to the margins.” Jeffrey has filed stories from more than 65 countries and won many awards for his work. “I’m constantly amazed at the hospitality of the poor. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been welcomed to a dirt-floor tent or house of someone who’s extremely poor, but they can’t wait to offer me something to drink or to eat or their only chair to sit on. I’m continually evangelized by the poor.”
