This hour-long documentary I shot and edited for the Chicago Sunday Evening Club explores the impact of current US immigration policies on Amy and Carlos, a young family from West Chicago. The program first aired on WTTW, Channel 11, PBS, Chicago on October 16, 2014.

Because Carlos was brought to the US illegally from Mexico as a child, they encounter severe penalties and barriers as they attempt to gain his resident status. Like thousands of families in this situation, they want to do the right thing, but there seems to be no path to follow. We tell the story of their decade-long struggle, and highlight the work of faith organizations across Chicago that are working to help families like theirs stay together.

Godparents for Tanzania, HAI Institute of Technology

The HAI Institute of Technology is the dream of Peniel Shali, a businessman in Moshi, Tanzania. Shali saw a need for vocational training in the areas of information technology, auto mechanics, electricity and construction engineering. Shali’s dream is supported by Godparents for Tanzania, a non-profit that hope through education for young people in the Kilimanjaro and Karatu regions of northern Tanzania.

Faraja Primary School, Emmanuel Nguvava

The Faraja School is one of only two primary schools in Tanzania that serve children with disabilities. Faraja School gives children hope and does it through a model of financial sustainability through agriculture. Emmanuel Nguvava is Director of the school.

Door of Hope Maasai Ministry

The Door of Hope Ministry is and example of a micro non-profit that is making a difference in the lives of young Maasai women through education. The Maasai are an African ethnic group that live in East Africa typically in and around large game parks. Door of Hope is the story of Tanzanian Lutheran Pastor Johnson Lyimo who dreamed of an outreach to young Maasai girls and how that dream connected with the dreams of an American visitor. Door of Hope is supported by Trinity Ecumenical Parish in Moneta, Virginia and Godparents for Tanzania.

Solar Reading Lights for Kids

Godparents for Tanzania-G4TZ- is a non-profit that provides scholarships to over 120 students in the Kilimanjaro and Karatu regions of Tanzania. Most students are in secondary school (high school), college and university. G4TZ also supports projects that help educate young people, including a rural primary school and a new technical school. Recently, G4TZ distributed solar powered reading lights to a group of students studying for the national exam. Students who fail this exam see their education end at 7th grade. Most students live in homes without electricity. The lights allow students to study at night.

Tanzania Next Summer!

In July, 2013 I will be working with Dwayne Westermann, a retired Lutheran pastor on a new video about Godparents for Tanzania. Godparents for Tanzania provides scholarships to over 120 students in the Kilimanjaro and Karatu regions of Tanzania. Most of the students are in secondary school (high school), college and university.

We will also be working with the Faraja School, a primary school in Tanzania bringing hope through education and physical therapy to disabled children.

Advocating for the Deaf: Rehema’s Testimony
CBM US, asked me to record this story at a disabilities forum at Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. The event took place in advance of the 2012 International AIDS Conference.

Rehema works with Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT), the largest indigenous provider of disability and rehabilitation services in that nation. CBM US partners with organizations like CCBRT at the local level. Every year, around 120,000 adults and children with disabilities and their caregivers achieve a better quality of life through CCBRT services.

My friend Cynthia Ebema narrates on behalf of Rehema.

Edongo Band, Kitgum, Northern Uganda

Jim Quattrocki and I were in Kitgum, Northern Uganda, recording a story at the Anglican Cathedral. I can’t remember if this is out of his camera or mine. Either way, it was a great day and beautiful music.
