Voices from the Stone is a poem by Barney Bush, Poet and Shawnee Tribal Leader with the Vinyard Indian Settlement, Herod, Illinois. This video is part of a documentary on fracking in Southern Illinois for Greater Chicago Broadcast Ministries. It was recorded on High Knob in Shawnee National Forest. Music and drumming by Mark Denzer.

Red-tailed Hawk in the Rain

The Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is across the road from our house. Wearing rubber boots, I took a Sunday afternoon stroll in the rain and rapidly melting snow. The reward was a performance by this Red-tailed Hawk. He (or she, I’m not sure) was perched on a small tree by the lake. Moments after spotting the bird, he flew off, only to return with a field mouse in his beak. I’ll spare readers the details. Perhaps it was the large golf umbrella over my head, or this was just a fearless bird, either way, he didn’t take off as I inched closer. This shot is from about 30 feet. Panasonic Lumix GH3, Nikkor 50mm lens, F.1.8, ISO 200. Hand-held. No image stabilization.

I took a walk over to Hidden Lake Forest Preserve to grab a sunset shot over the lake. The DuPage County Forest Preserve system is among Northern Illinois greatest assets. Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3 micro four thirds camera, Olympus M.Zuiko 9-18mm 1:4-5.6 lens. ISO160, 1/1000 sec.

Matthiessen State Park is located in central LaSalle County, Illinois, southwest of Chicago. These shots were taken along the Vermilion River which runs through part of the park. My son, Connor performed the guitar music.
