The influence of fundamentalist Christianity is felt in every walk of American life. This program helps viewers better understand the story behind the rise of fundamentalism and the later evangelical movement, so that Christians, liberal and conservative, can find ways to open doors of dialogue and ecumenical fellowship.

The program is the final in a series of programs titled, MOSIC, The Video Magazine of the ELCA, produced by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). It was published on Sept 15, 2007. This documentary features insights from evangelical scholars from Wheaton College and Moody Bible Institute, as well as Mark Wilhelm and Martin E. Marty from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Understanding Fundamentalism unpacks the use of the name “evangelical,” and touches on the unique roles played by Pentecostal and African American churches in the story of fundamentalism. It also looks at examples of ELCA Lutherans and conservative Christians working together across denominational lines in healthy ways. Finally, the program discusses the rise of religious fundamentalist extremism and its impact on Christians in the Middle East.
